Declaring October 15th Global Lobular Breast Cancer Awareness Day

Help us declare October 15th as Global Lobular Breast Cancer Awareness Day and spread the word that Invasive Lobular Carcinoma (ILC), also known as Lobular Breast Cancer, is a type that may not always form a lump and can be missed on mammograms. While ILC comprises 15% of breast cancer diagnoses, it is understudied and lacks targeted treatments.

Shining a Spotlight on Lobular Breast Cancer

As part of Breast Cancer Awareness month, LBCA is shining a spotlight on the 15% of breast cancer diagnoses each year that are invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC). In this video hear from ILC patients and families about the shock of learning that ILC was missed on mammograms, and clinicians and researchers about the importance of raising awareness of lobular breast cancer, a distinct breast cancer type that may not form a lump and is often diagnosed later when tumors are larger. As the 2nd most common type of breast cancer with over 46,000 women diagnosed each year in the US, ILC receives less than 1% of breast cancer research funding and has no specific treatment. Help us raise awareness of this troubling type of breast cancer by sharing this video with your family, friends and contacts.

Dedicated In Tribute to Ann Camden, Co-Chair of Patient Advocate Advisory Board

December 25, 1970 – July 18, 2024

LBCA dedicates the October 15th Global Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign in honor of Ann Camden, who championed the idea during her time on the Patient Advocate Advisory Board (PAAB); Ann passed away on July 18, 2024.

Ann was diagnosed with invasive ductal cancer in 2009, and in 2016 with another primary cancer, lobular, that had spread to her bones, lymph nodes and a pleural effusion. After her diagnosis, Ann maintained a blog, Down-Not-Out, where she shared her journey with cancer. Ann was an active advocate for LBCA. She was part of a small group of committed volunteers who shared their time, experience, and expertise to develop a patient experience survey on metastatic invasive lobular carcinoma (mILC). The anonymous survey was used to raise awareness about the experiences of patients with mILC, and the critical need for more research. In addition Ann also lent her skills in communications and marketing to LBCA initiatives. She provided input on and developed a first draft of a one-page document raising awareness of breast cancer subtypes and how they all need focused research, and she co-authored a letter about lobular breast cancer that was used in outreach to breast cancer program leadership at cancer centers across the country. LBCA honored Ann in 2022 for all of her work on the PAAB and for Lobular Breast Cancer patients.
