Lobular Breast Cancer Alliance Inc., a 501(c)(3) public charity incorporated in Delaware (LBCA), is looking for an attorney who could volunteer to provide legal support and serve as its corporate secretary for a few hours per month beginning in September.
LBCA is the only organization in the United States dedicated to increasing awareness and research of lobular breast cancer (also referred to as invasive lobular carcinoma or ILC), the second most common form of breast cancer. ILC is more common in women than cancers of the kidney, brain, pancreas, liver, or ovaries. But, remarkably, research on ILC is in its infancy. In fact, despite many differences from the more common invasive ductal breast cancer (IDC), specific treatment protocols have not been developed for ILC, and enhanced imaging and detection research is sorely needed due to ILC tumors typically not forming in lumps detectable with self-examination or more common imaging techniques.
LBCA was founded by patient advocates, guided by an expert, international scientific advisory board and a patient advocate advisory board, and is governed by a board of directors that typically meets on a quarterly basis. LBCA is based in the US and serves the global lobular community, having participated in and supported ILC-symposia both domestic and abroad. Through its website lobularbreastcancer.org, social media (Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram), monthly newsletters and periodic webinars, LBCA provides information to raise awareness and increase knowledge of lobular breast disease among researchers, clinicians, patients, and the public. LBCA also funds ILC research grants.
LBCA’s annual budget exceeds $1 million, supported by contributions from individuals and foundations across the country and corporate sponsorships. Its multi-state registrations for charitable solicitation are handled by Cogency Global. LBCA has the highest rating (Platinum) given to nonprofits by Candid and Guidestar.
LBCA’s day-to-day legal needs have been addressed by a part-time volunteer general counsel, with support from outside counsel as needed. LBCA’s legal requirements primarily involve corporate governance, contracting, fundraising matters and compliance issues, such as grant making agreements (domestic and abroad), corporate sponsorship agreements, employment offer letters, publication releases, local advocacy group arrangements, board meeting preparation and attendance, etc. We expect volunteer counsel would need to spend on average four to seven hours per month. We would like to find an attorney with a passion for our mission and experience working with nonprofits on these matters.
Lawyers who are interested in this opportunity should send a letter of interest and resume to Joehutcheson@lbca.org.
