The third session in LBCA’s Liquid Biopsy Webinar Series, Liquid Biopsy in the Management and Monitoring of Metastatic ILC, is now available to watch on demand.
This session focused on the emerging use of liquid biopsy tools in the care and monitoring of individuals living with metastatic invasive lobular carcinoma (mILC), bringing together clinicians, researchers, and a patient advocate to discuss where the research currently stands and where the field may be headed.
LBCA Scientific Advisory Board members Dr. Daniel Stover, breast medical oncologist, and Dr. Rita Mukhtar, breast surgical oncologist, discussed current research, standards of care, and their work to improve the monitoring of mILC. Dr. Mukhtar also discussed the PLUMB study, a prospective registry study evaluating serial circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) in patients with mILC.
Dr. Carolina Reduzzi, cancer biology researcher and prior LBCA research grant recipient, shared insights from her work studying circulating tumor cells (CTCs) and circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA), including what researchers are learning about these liquid biopsy tools in the context of mILC.
Amy Russell-Parliman, LBCA Patient Advocate Advisory Board member and patient advocate living with mILC, shared the patient perspective on why continued research in this evolving field is important and moderated the question-and-answer session.
Watch the webinar to learn more about the evolving role of liquid biopsy in mILC, and read LBCA’s Liquid Biopsy Fact Sheet for ILC.
SPEAKERS:
Dr. Daniel Stover – Associate Professor of Internal Medicine in the Division of Medical Oncology and Department of Biomedical Informatics·Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center
Dr. Daniel Stover is an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine in the Division of Medical Oncology and Department of Biomedical Informatics at Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center. His research focus is clinical computational oncology, which is the application of computational approaches to analyzing volumes of available and complex patient data and developing personalized treatment approaches and mechanisms for predicting therapeutic responses. Specifically, Dr. Stover’s lab develops and implements such ‘big data’ solutions to clinical challenges in breast cancer.
Dr. Rita Mukhtar – Professor of Clinical Surgery, University of California, San Francisco
Dr. Rita Mukhtar is a Professor of Clinical Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco, and is a fellowship-trained breast surgical oncologist with a research focus on invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC). Her work is currently supported by the National Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society, and METAvivor. In addition to her clinical practice in breast surgical oncology, Dr. Mukhtar leads the Lobular Breast Cancer Research Program at UCSF and is the national principal investigator for the PLUMB study. The PLUMB study is a prospective registry study (i.e., a study tracking the health and study responses of a group of people forward in time) evaluating the efficacy of using serial ctDNA testing on study participants with mILC.
Dr. Carolina Reduzzi – Assistant Professor of Cancer Biology Research in Medicine and Director of the Cristofanilli CTC Laboratory, Weill Cornell Medicine
Dr. Carolina Reduzzi is an Assistant Professor of Cancer Biology Research in Medicine and Director of the Liquid Biopsy Platform and Cristofanilli CTC laboratory at Weill Cornell Medicine. With more than a decade of experience studying circulating tumor cells (CTCs) and circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) across multiple solid tumors, her work is focused on developing novel liquid biopsy-based pipelines and biomarkers to advance precision oncology.
Amy Russell-Parliman – LBCA Patient Advocate Advisory Board member
Amy Russell-Parliman, MHA, serves as a director of diagnostic imaging for a health system in upstate New York, but her accent is all Georgia. After being diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer in 2014, Amy faced a mILC diagnosis in 2019. Since then, her advocacy efforts have included serving in volunteer roles with Project Life, LBCA, the Metastatic Breast Cancer Alliance, and SurvivingBreastCancer.org. She completed Living Beyond Breast Cancer’s Hear My Voice program, is a Project Lead Graduate, and has been an advocate on Department of Defense grants.
