LBCA and ILC Research at SABCS 2025: Advancing Lobular Research Together

Lobular breast cancer and LBCA advocacy was more visible than ever before at this year’s San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium (Dec. 9–12, 2025), the largest, annual breast cancer research conference in the world.

This year it seemed like bright blue “Ask me About Lobular” t-shirts sported by LBCA patient advocates and several scientists were everywhere. Ten were worn proudly by the patient advocate travel scholars whose attendance was supported by LBCA.

Most importantly, was a perceived, heightened emphasis on ILC research throughout the week-long scientific breast cancer conference.  Special programming began on Tuesday, Dec. 9th with a dedicated special session highlighting recent updates in ILC sponsored by LBCA, Lobular Breast Cancer Updates, which featured LBCA scientific advisory board members past and present, and Patient Advocate Advisory Board member Flora Migyanka.

ILC research was presented all week through poster sessions featuring over 60 ILC research posters (up from just 9 four years ago!) These included a special ILC spotlight poster session focusing on new findings in ILC pathology, biology, metastasis, and on the potential of liquid biopsy and ILC-targeted treatments.

The spotlight session also featured seven of the ten ILC posters that were winners of LBCA’s Research Abstract Merit Awards. LBCA provided travel reimbursement to the 10 winning lead ILC research abstract authors (below) to facilitate their ability to come to San Antonio and present their important studies:

  • Abdalla Wedn, University of Pittsburgh, School of Medicine
  • Steffi Oesterreich, University of Pittsburgh and UPMC
  • Tanmayi Pai, Emory University
  • Higinio Dopeso, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center
