Honoring Founding Advocate Julia K. Levine – ILC Publications Library and new Susan G. Komen-LBCA mILC Research Grant Named in Her Memory

On March 18th Julia K. Levine passed away in Venice, CA after a 12 year battle with metastatic invasive lobular carcinoma (mILC). She leaves a legacy of dedicated volunteerism and advocacy in the global ILC community. As a founding advocate of LBCA, we credit LBCA’s existence to Julia for having introduced LBCA’s founder Leigh Pate to other ILC patient advocates in 2016. Together they drafted the first whitepaper about ILC that led to the launch of the LBCA website in 2017.

Julia immersed herself in learning about the science of lobular breast cancer and lobular metastases and in developing new and better ways to share this knowledge with others. She was instrumental in the creation of nearly every LBCA patient resource on the LBCA website, participated in webinars and advocate chats, clinical trials, traveled and spoke at conferences, and managed the LBCA publications library. In fact, her contributions have been so vast over the years we’ve created a page on our website to capture them all and honor her memory, in addition to renaming the library in her honor as the “Julia K. Levine ILC Publications Library.”

Julia touched so many in the global ILC community, we’ve captured remembrances from LBCA SAB members, ILC scientists and patient advocates as well as the many videos and news articles she collaborated.

Susan G. Komen-LBCAMetastatic Invasive Lobular Carcinoma Research Grant In Named in Honor of Julia K.Levine

Susan G. Komen and LBCA are excited to announce this new funding opportunity named in honor of Julia K.Levine. Julia was diagnosed with metastatic lobular breast cancer in 2012. From almost the moment of her diagnosis, she became a tireless advocate to raise awareness about lobular breast cancer, promote ILC research and educate and support others with mILC. Julia passed away in March, only months after challenging a lobular breast cancer research gathering with the question, “Isn’t it time for a metastatic lobular breast cancer research initiative?” This collaboration and announcement represent the first major step in fulfilling Julia’s wishes.  To learn more about this grant, read the full announcement on Komen.org here

Julia’s memory will continue to inspire and propel LBCA forward in our unwavering mission to eradicate lobular breast cancer.
