Announcing the Lobular Breast Cancer Research Abstract Merit Award

We are excited to announce a new $5,000 sponsorship –  the Lobular Breast Cancer Research Abstract Merit Award, in collaboration with the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR). This merit award will recognize the best abstracts focusing on lobular breast cancer research among those selected for poster presentation at the 47th Annual San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium (SABCS) held December 10-13, 2024, at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio, TX.

The new Lobular Breast Cancer Alliance Lobular Breast Cancer Research Abstract Merit Award will be granted to the five best abstracts focusing on lobular breast cancer research among those accepted for presentation at the 47th SABCS as determined by a lobular breast cancer research selection committee.  The first author of each of the five winning abstracts will receive $1,000 for reimbursement for their costs incurred related to attendance at the 47th SABCS. With this new merit award program, we hope to stimulate interest among scientists in conducting lobular breast cancer research. This aim is core to LBCA’s mission efforts to engage patients, clinicians, and researchers to increase knowledge of lobular breast disease and promote lobular breast cancer research. Laurie Hutcheson, Executive Director of LBCA expressed delight over this new collaboration noting “I am so thrilled to be  working side by side once again through this new partnership with AACR. By creating an incentive for more lobular breast cancer research presentations at SABCS we are taking one more step forward towards our vision of  a world in which lobular breast cancer is detected earlier, treated effectively and eradicated permanently.”

LBCA was founded in 2017 by individuals with invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC), LBCA became a 501c3 nonprofit organization in 2022 dedicated to raising awareness of ILC and the need for more ILC research.  As the only organization in the US dedicated to lobular breast disease, LBCA is the go-to source for information on lobular breast cancer including current studies, lobular-specific clinical trials and educational fact sheets and recorded webinars for patients. LBCA is guided by an international scientific advisory board of researchers and clinicians and a patient advocate advisory board. LBCA partners with patients, scientists, clinicians, and breast cancer organizations worldwide to increase dialogue about ILC and fund vital ILC research.

Since 1977,  San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium (SABCS®) has been the leading scientific conference for basic scientists, physician-scientists, clinical investigators and breast care providers, and advocates seeking an exchange of new information in experimental biology, etiology, prevention, diagnosis, and therapy of premalignant breast disease and breast cancer. Founded, owned, and operated by UT Health San Antonio, the symposium has grown to a five-day event attended by an international audience of academic investigators and private physicians from over 100 countries to attain information through abstract presentations, panel discussions, research findings, and state-of-the-art educational sessions. UT Health at San Antonio and the American Association for Cancer Research sponsor the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium. This collaboration utilizes the clinical strengths of UT Health and the AACR’s scientific prestige in basic, translational, and clinical cancer research to expedite the delivery of the latest scientific advances to the clinic.
