LBCA’s 2025 NBCC Advocate Leadership Summit Travel Scholars Describe Their Experiences

The NBCC Advocate Leadership Summit was held on May 3-5th, 2025 in Washington, DC. The conference welcomes both new and experienced breast cancer advocates who are passionate about creating meaningful change in areas like public policy, research, and clinical trials. Attendees gain practical tools, fresh perspectives, and mentorship to support their goals. From shaping legislation to contributing to cutting-edge research or improving the accessibility and structure of clinical trials, the summit offers guidance for every path.

LBCA supports patient advocates’ attendance at this summit by providing a travel scholarship program that includes a competitive application process. Successful applicants receive a significant portion of their travel costs reimbursed and in exchange agree to write about their experience at the conference to help inform others who have never attended.

This year’s scholars, Ciara Mohan Gustafson and Caroline Lazar, shared powerful takeaways from their time at the summit. Ciara emphasized the impact of Lobby Day, where patient advocates collectively held over 200 meetings on Capitol Hill to oppose funding cuts to medical care and research. She also highlighted the summit’s balance between scientific learning and hands-on policy training. Caroline, newly diagnosed with metastatic invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC), was particularly moved by sessions on underrepresented breast cancer subtypes and the Artemis Project’s work on preventive vaccines. Her experience deepened her resolve to pursue further training and advocate for better research and representation for ILC. Both advocates expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity and are committed to continuing their advocacy with renewed energy and insight.
