Hear from LBCA’s Grant Awardee, Dr. Marina Sharifi, the inaugural recipient of SNMMI – LBCA Invasive Lobular Carcinoma Imaging Research Fellowship

Dr. Marina Sharifi, MD, PhD, was announced in March as the recipient of the inaugural Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI) and LBCA Invasive Lobular Carcinoma (ILC) Imaging Research Fellowship. Dr. Sharifi is an assistant professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology, Oncology and Palliative Care at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and received the $100,000 grant based on her proposal, Integrating minimally invasive biomarkers of estrogen signaling to detect endocrine therapy resistance in metastatic invasive lobular cancer. Recently, LBCA COO Mason Mitchell-Daniels checked in with Dr. Sharifi to see how the pilot study is going. Dr Sharifi’s pilot study uses a blood test and imaging to identify a biomarker that will indicate when a treatment isn’t working. She discussed her hope that if she can find a biomarker to indicate that a treatment isn’t working, this can enable switching to another treatment sooner and help prolong survival.
