Dr. Shannon Klingman, LUME Founder, Shares Her ILC Story and New Focus on Lobular Breast Cancer Research

Dr. Shannon Klingman, founder of Lume Deodorant, was inspired to help fund lobular breast cancer research after her own diagnosis with invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) last year.  In a recent interview with LBCA Executive Director, Laurie Hutcheson, Dr. Klingman shared the story of her diagnosis and treatment for ILC.

When I was diagnosed, I had never heard of lobular breast cancer. Even as an OBGYN, we don’t talk enough about the differences between breast cancer. It is critically important we understand that lobular breast cancer is a completely different disease. I realized then I needed to tell my story…and immediately asked where is the (research) funding? This is now my focus in life – investing in lobular breast cancer research. LBCA moves quickly to put funding to work on lobular research, and I wanted to be part of that.

Dr. Klingman made a historic $1 million gift to LBCA to fund the targeted research that ILC critically needs and has partnered with LBCA on a “Match the Million” Challenge with the potential to double her historic gift and invest in up to four targeted ILC research grants. Since launching on March 20th, the challenge has raised over $165,000 dollars and will run through the end of May, National Cancer Research Month.
