LBCA Executive Director, Founder Leigh Pate, Founding SAB Member Steffi Oesterrich and other SAB Members Co-Author New Study to Help Prioritize Focus for Future Collaborations on ILC Research
Beginning in 2018, LBCA Founder Leigh Pate and Founding SAB Member Steffi Oesterrich led the design and in 2021, the conduct of a survey of the worldwide community of lobular breast cancer researchers and patient advocates to develop consensus around priority areas for collaborative lobular breast cancer research. The results of the survey were just published in npjBreastCancer in a research article titled “International Survey on Invasive Lobular Breast Cancer Identifies Priority Research Questions.”
In the article, the authors, which include LBCA Executive Director Laurie Hutcheson and several LBCA scientific advisory board members, report the survey findings. They note that there is growing awareness in the scientific and medical community of the unique etiology, biology, and clinical presentation of invasive lobular breast cancer (ILC), but more research is necessary to translate findings into management and treatment guidelines. The article explains how the survey was designed and conducted to solicit input from breast cancer physicians, laboratory-based researchers, and lobular breast cancer patients to analyze the current understanding of ILC, and identify consensus questions for prioritizing ILC research. The results of the survey are expected to contribute to the international lobular breast cancer scientist and patient community efforts to collaborate on a priority research agenda for getting to the most effective strategies for improving management and personalizing treatment for patients with ILC.
